Percha no Asfalto

Circo do Asfalto

(São Paulo – SP)

Itinerancy and direct contact with the audience on the street are important features of the work of Companhia do Asfalto, a troupe created in 2008 by Douglas and Fran Marinho that has traveled to over 1.500 towns in Brazil. In the intervention Percha no Asfalto the couple presents the circus technique perch: a pole is supported by one person at some distance from the ground, while the other person climbs to the top to perform the act.

The modern language of the performance is inspired by the couple’s constant exchange of information with audiences in different regions of the country. In 2014, for example, they went on a 7-thousand kilometer journey along the São Francisco river, from the source to the mouth, visiting communities with its workshops and shows. “The performance originated in these human relationships in territories that are so different but yet have so much in common. It mirrors this diversity, the construction of learning relationships where people always have something to offer and teach each other. In this case, the circus is able to reach beyond entertainment and become a tool for the audience to reflect and learn about themselves and the world”, say the artists.
